FODIDE in our bid to empower people with disabilities has secured funding to establish an improved mushroom growing project which will earn income to the organization as well as nutrition to children with disabilities in schools.

Disability occurs when an individual with impairment is deprived of practical opportunities and results from interaction between the resources available to the person personal characteristics (e.g type of impairment, age,gender)
and the environment.(Physical,social,cultural,political,
and economical). In summery Disability is used in the context of the capability approach .The term can also be used to refer to an individuals condition which can be physical,sensory,or mental (intellectual or behavioral.
Many disabled persons are employed in the informal sector of the economy where they are maginalised and often earn less that none disabled peers while at the same time lucking the necessary supports to do their job effectively. In developing countries most disabled persons live in rural areas, further compounding the challenges to descent work they face.

Project Development activities

Development begins with the disabled.
Poverty is considered to be a major obstacle to any development effort. It denies the disabled the choices leaving most of them vulnerable without any alternative but rather struggling to survive. The relation between poverty and disability is commonly accepted as vicious cycle. Its a two-way relationship. Disability adds to the risk of poverty and conditions of poverty increase the risk of disability. Disability places constraints on an individual"s earning capacity through sometimes a reduced ability to work, lack of accessibility in work environment and discrimination.
Persons with disabilities are a low priority and ill treated target especially in the developing world when it comes to social economic integration. There is a general misunderstanding in society that PWDs are a destitute without knowledge ,skills and opportunities to operate business and should instesd be objects of charity.
In the social model, Disability refers to the social effects of physical or mental impairment. It makes a clear distinction between the impairment itself such as medical condition that makes a person unable to work and the disabling effects of society in relation to that impairment. In simple terms, Its not the inability to walk that prevents a person entering a building unaided but the existence of stairs that are inaccessible to a wheelchair user. In other words Disability is socially constructed.
 Our rights must be observed

A disabled in business

The cross  boarder bussiness trade,here the disabled person on a tri-cycle carrying heavy load of merchandise from Kenya across to Uganda.
PWDs say that we are responsible persons we have families to look after our children need food clothes and the like we have to work hard however the business is not reliable, we need  empowerment

The members came to attend the planning meeting at their headquarter of people with disability office at the District. PWDs believe that nothing for us without us, we can plan better for ourselves just give us the opportunity to express ourselves.

 Child protection and domestic violence workshop for PWDs conducted at border primary school with support from World Vision Busia.World Vision Busia is a development partner organization of FODIDE.
Domestic violence is another cause of disability we better avoid it by sensitizing the community on its effects and how we can enjoy a community free of violence, we can end violence.

Most people with physical disabilities have challenges in moving from one place to another. This causes limitation in day-to-day activities and personal development in society, most of such people need assistive devises to help them with mobility. However, getting these aid is difficult due to a number of reasons, they are expensive and therefore not affordable by most people, they are not readily available on the open market so persons with disabilities have to travel long distances to get them. Each individual needs a personalized appliance fitting the size, height, age, and disability. Some appliances are not available and have to be ordered for from abroad.
