Crutches programme

Members of FODIDE attending a training on the rights of children in order to effectively advocate for children with disabilities.
The training took place at Rand Hotel in Busia Municipality.

Most people with physical disabilities have challenges in moving from one place to another. This causes limitation in day-to-day activities and personal development in society, most of such people need assistive devises to help them with mobility. However, getting these aid is difficult due to a number of reasons, they are expensive and therefore not affordable by most people, they are not readily available on the open market so persons with disabilities have to travel long distances to get them. Each individual needs a personalized appliance fitting the size, height, age, and disability. Some appliances are not available and have to be ordered for from abroad.

Poverty is considered to be a major  obstacle to any development effort. It denies the disabled the choices leaving most of them vulnerable without any alternative but rather struggling to survive. The relation between poverty and disability is commonly accepted as a vicious cycle, its a two way relationship. Disability adds to the risk of poverty and conditions of poverty increase the risk of disability, Disability places constraints on an individuals earning capacity through sometimes a reduced ability to work, lack of accessibility in work environment and discrimination.

Persons with disability are a low priority and ill treated target especially in the developing world when it comes to social economic integration. There is general misunderstanding in society that persons with disabilities  are destitute without knowledge, skills and opportunities to operate business and should instead be objects of charity and discrimination.

Many disabled persons are employed in the informal sector of the economy where they are marginalized and often earn less than none disabled peers while at the same time lucking the necessary supports to do their job effectively. In developed countries disabled persons live in rural areas further compounding the challenges to decent work they face.
Beneficiaries from the donation lineup for a group photo express their joy after receiving the walking devices. They say that they used to see only rich disabled persons using such classic devices but it was to their surprise to see themselves also having them.

Members of FODIDE in a planning meeting, we hold such meetings oftenly to build the capacity and evaluate our performances
For the first time they moved from wooden crutches to metallic. in their own words; this metallic crutches are good, light presentable gives total comfort and makes movements easy.
FODIDE executive committee in a capacity building workshop and leadership training this is done quarterly.

The Executive Director standing shares with some of the disabled across in Kenya.  persons with disabilities are involved in cross border trade using their try cycles to offer transport of goods and luggage's, what they earn is only enough for the daily bread in case one falls sick and is not able to work that day that means their will be no food at home.

After the general meeting which is held annually members take a group photo our members come from a different sub counties around the Busia District.

This boy was on the streets of Busia town smoking marijuana and sneafing petrol, was identified trained in shoe shining and repair. he now earns a daily income. He vowed never to go back to the streets he appreciates the good work by FODIDE.
Its good for children to play but better to put a watchful eye on a playing child, the young boy fall from a tree when he was trying to get himself a mango to cue as his lunch at school, some parents cant afford to pay lunch fees for their children at school.

Constance Taaka of Bukwala village Busia District at one year old got severe malaria was taken to the health center but after all the treatment given she developed a mental problem. She started acting in a funny way but the doctors have failed to establish the cause, her parents are stranded with her, they came and contacted our office we took note of the situation, She needs to be taken to better health centers which is costly and she also needs a wheel chair for mobility. whoever can run for her rescue is very welcome, any kind of support is welcome.

Esther Lucy Akinyi got crippled at four months she is a polio survivor they tried different health centres they also put cement on her legs for sometime but it could not work still. Lucy is learning, she understands very well and she is very bright in  class according to her teachers. The challenge is that she comes from a very poor family which cannot afford to give all the necesary support.FODIDE is looking for support for such children she also needs a wheel chair for mobility.

Bakari now 14 years born in a situation where he couldnt walk but has a sound mind he doesntr go to school because he lacks a wheel chair the schools are very far he cant crawl to school he had resorted to training in electronics but as FODIDE we feel he needs some education before taking on that training in future we plan to have a school for the disabled to catter for such children.

The two boys moved over 23 km to FODIDE office hoping to get wheel chairs but unfortunately we had none, They are in secondary school. Mobility devices are needed to be available always at the office but they are very expensive and have to be ordered for its a challenge.

Disability comes at anytime any age this one was developing disability she has to be supported to sit upright but who can be available always to give such assistance.
